What to look for in a prayer tracking app

Can the reminder reach you when your phone is silent?

This is the one that catches people out. On iOS, notification sounds obey the ring/silent switch, and no app can override that. If your phone lives on silent, a prayer notification will arrive without a sound — which is precisely when you needed it.

Only an alarm can break through, and on iOS that requires the app to schedule real alarms rather than notifications. Check for that before anything else if you keep your phone silenced.

Does it work with no signal?

Prayer times can be calculated on the device from your coordinates; there is no technical need to fetch them from a server. An app that does fetch them will fail on a plane, in a basement, or abroad without data — and it means your location is being sent somewhere.

What does it do with your location and your habits?

Prayer apps know where you are and when you are there. That is valuable data, and several large apps have been found selling it. Look for whether the app has an account, whether it needs a server, and what its privacy policy specifically says rather than what it gestures at.

The reliable tell is specificity. A policy that names exactly what leaves the device is doing something different from one that says it values your privacy.

Does making up a prayer repair the day?

Trackers that mark a day as permanently failed teach you to stop opening them. Check that recording a make-up counts, and that one missed day does not wipe out months of consistency.

Can you set the calculation method and the madhab?

If you cannot match your local mosque, the times will feel wrong forever. Both settings need to be there — method for Fajr and Isha, madhab for Asr.

What happens to what you paid for?

Some apps move existing features behind a new, higher tier later. It is worth reading the terms for whether that is ruled out, because by the time it happens you have already built the habit around the app.
